Approach
Community Scorecard
At Eagle, we want to build community trust and confidence in our ability to construct, operate and close a world class mine in the Upper Peninsula (UP). The Eagle Mine Community Scorecard allows community members to rate our performance in five areas you said are important. Those five areas are: environmental performance, local hire, safety, transparency and communication, and leave more wood on the woodpile.
Here is how it works
At community forums we provide an update on the mine. We report how we have performed over the last six months in the five identified areas. We then ask community members to rate our performance. Using electronics clickers, community members score our performance as: “exceeds expectations”, “meets expectations”, “below expectations”, or “need more information”. The community’s scores at the forum are projected on a screen immediately for everyone to see. After the scoring, we ask for comments on how we can improve or what you would like to see us do better. The scoring, the main comments from all the forums and our responses to those comments are captured in the Eagle Mine Community Scorecard. We will repeat the community forums, community scoring, and publishing the results every six months.
Community forums were held in Baraga/L’Anse, Michigamme, Humboldt, Ishpeming, Marquette and Big Bay in September. Additional events were also held in Ishpeming and Marquette in October, where community members also scored Eagle Mine’s performance. The next round of community forums is scheduled for April/May 2013.
Next year, in addition to community forums, we will ask people to rate our performance during public presentations and other meetings. We will do this because the scoring becomes more reliable as the number of people scoring the Eagle Mine increases.
This is the first Eagle Mine Community Scorecard to be published. It will be advertised in local newspapers and posted here on Eagle’s website. To our knowledge no other mining company has introduced a tool that allows the community to regularly rate their performance, which is then made public. We hope with the Eagle Mine Community Scorecard the UP continues to set new benchmarks in how modern mining works with communities.
